Kuwait downs Iranian drones hitting energy sites after truce

Kuwait said its air defenses intercepted 28 Iranian drones targeting critical oil facilities, power stations and water desalination plants on Wednesday, causing “serious material damage.” The attacks came hours after Washington and Tehran announced a two‑week ceasefire, raising doubts about Iran’s commitment to de‑escalation.
Kuwait’s Defense Ministry announced Wednesday that its air defense systems had repelled a wave of “intense hostile Iranian attacks” involving 28 drones, some of which struck vital energy infrastructure in the south of the country. The ministry confirmed that oil installations, power stations and water desalination plants suffered “serious material damage” as a result of the strikes. The incident occurred just hours after US President Donald Trump declared a two‑week pause in hostilities with Iran, based on what he called a “workable” 10‑point Iranian proposal for negotiations.
Ceasefire Violations and Regional Risks
The timing of the attacks—immediately after the ceasefire announcement—undermines trust in Tehran’s willingness to halt its campaign against Gulf states. Trump had set a deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept an agreement, warning otherwise of “the destruction of an entire civilization.” Kuwait, a close US ally hosting American military assets, has repeatedly been targeted by Iranian drones and missiles during the six‑week conflict that began on February 28. The war has already claimed more than 1,400 lives, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Türkiye’s Stance and Outlook
Türkiye, which welcomed the US‑Iran ceasefire earlier Wednesday, has consistently called for a full implementation of the truce and a return to diplomacy. Ankara also offered its support for the upcoming negotiations in Islamabad. However, the continued Iranian attacks on Kuwait’s energy heartland demonstrate the fragility of the pause and the persistent threat to critical infrastructure in the Gulf. Unless all parties adhere strictly to the terms, the temporary ceasefire may fail to prevent further escalation, deepening the regional security crisis and disrupting global energy markets.
