Kyrgyzstan election commission validates early parliamentary vote

Kyrgyzstan’s election authority confirmed that the country’s early parliamentary polls are legally binding, certifying 29 of 30 multi-mandate constituencies. One district was annulled after inspectors cited breaches of electoral rules, while officials emphasized that the new majoritarian system continues to reshape the nation’s political landscape.
Kyrgyzstan’s Central Electoral Commission announced on Wednesday that the results of the Nov. 30 early parliamentary elections stand, affirming the legitimacy of the nationwide vote under the country’s revised electoral model. The confirmation follows weeks of scrutiny after ballots were cast across the Central Asian republic.
Certification and irregularities
Commission members reported that 29 multi-mandate constituencies met legal standards, allowing 87 candidates to secure seats in the new parliament. However, one of the 30 constituencies was nullified due to what the commission described as “violations of electoral legislation,” though officials did not disclose further details on the nature of the breach.
New majoritarian structure
The early elections marked one of the first large-scale tests of Kyrgyzstan’s transition from party lists to a majoritarian system, a shift designed to strengthen local representation. Under the new rules, each district elects three deputies. The reforms also reduced the size of parliament from 120 to 90 members, a change that continues to influence political competition.
Background to the early vote
The decision to hold snap elections came after Kyrgyzstan’s parliament voted on Sept. 25 to dissolve itself, citing scheduling pressures linked to the country’s electoral calendar. The next regular parliamentary vote had originally been set for November 2026, with a presidential election planned for January 2027. More than 1.5 million citizens participated in the early polls, producing a turnout of roughly 37%.
