Lavrov, Palestinian VP discuss Gaza ceasefire and reconstruction

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Palestinian Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh discussed the need for a sustainable Gaza ceasefire and the reconstruction of civilian infrastructure. Moscow reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution and Palestinian national unity.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation with Palestinian Vice President and PLO Deputy Chairman Hussein al-Sheikh on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. The two diplomats focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with particular attention to establishing a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and beginning the reconstruction of the enclave’s largely destroyed civilian infrastructure as soon as possible.
West Bank stability and Palestinian unity
Lavrov and al-Sheikh also addressed efforts to stabilise the situation in the West Bank. Moscow reaffirmed its long-standing position that the Palestinian issue can only be resolved through a comprehensive settlement based on internationally recognised legal principles, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state coexisting peacefully and securely alongside Israel. The conversation also covered efforts to restore Palestinian national unity on the PLO political platform, including in the context of Fatah’s Eighth General Conference held from May 14 to 16.
Russian-Palestinian relations
The two sides reviewed issues related to strengthening traditionally friendly Russian-Palestinian relations. The call comes amid ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, where more than 72,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023.
