Major Quakes Strike Southern Philippines, Affecting Tens of Thousands

Two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.4 and 6.7 in magnitude, struck the southern Philippines in quick succession, impacting over 66,000 families. The quakes killed at least eight people, destroyed hundreds of homes, and triggered a tsunami warning, leading to mass evacuations and the declaration of a state of emergency in the worst-hit region.
A series of powerful tremors has left a trail of destruction in the southern Philippines, with official figures indicating that more than 66,000 families have been affected. The seismic events, which included a major 7.4 magnitude quake followed hours later by a strong 6.7 magnitude aftershock, have prompted a large-scale emergency response.
The province of Davao Oriental, identified as the epicenter of the crisis, has declared a state of emergency. Governor Nelson Dayanghirang reported that approximately 100 houses were completely destroyed, with around 500 others sustaining partial damage. This has resulted in the displacement of over 7,900 individuals, with hundreds more taking preemptive evacuation measures.
The human cost of the disaster continues to rise, with at least eight fatalities confirmed. The initial quake triggered a tsunami alert, causing panic and the evacuation of coastal communities before the warning was later lifted. The region remains on high alert as the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council has recorded over 800 aftershocks, including a significant 5.8 magnitude tremor, complicating rescue and assessment efforts.

A comprehensive estimate of the damage to infrastructure and agriculture is still pending as authorities focus on immediate search, rescue, and relief operations. The Philippine government, along with local disaster agencies, is coordinating the response, providing shelter and aid to the thousands displaced by one of the most significant seismic events to hit the Mindanao region recently.
