Malaysia's Sultan warns of sweeping corruption crackdown across government agencies

Sultan Ibrahim Iskander declared graft a betrayal of public trust and placed police, immigration, customs, and even the anti-corruption commission under scrutiny. His warning follows weekend protests demanding MACC chief Azam Baki's resignation.
Malaysia's Sultan Ibrahim Iskander issued a stark warning Monday that corruption within government agencies will be addressed "firmly and without compromise." In a statement released by his office and reported by state news agency Bernama, the Sultan declared graft a betrayal of public trust that will not be tolerated across the nation's administration.
All Agencies Under Scrutiny
"Do not think the fight against corruption is only focused on a handful of departments or those who give and receive bribes," Ibrahim warned. "Be warned that those in the Royal Malaysia Police, the Immigration Department, the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and many others are also under scrutiny." He emphasized that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission itself is under investigation, with officers of all ranks, along with middlemen and suppliers of equipment, uniforms, and medical items, within his "radar."
Intelligence and Accountability
"Do not assume that I am unaware of what is taking place, as I have my own sources of intelligence," the Sultan stated, calling for immediate transfers if officers fail to maintain integrity and perform duties honestly. His remarks follow Sunday's protest in Kuala Lumpur demanding MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki's resignation, with demonstrators condemning the government's handling of corruption issues as overly lenient.
Azam Under Investigation
Azam has faced increasing scrutiny after Bloomberg reported he allegedly continued holding shares exceeding civil servant limits in 2025. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil confirmed a special committee has been entrusted to investigate corruption allegations surrounding the MACC chief.
