Natasa Pirc Musar was sworn in Friday as Slovenia’s first-ever female president.

Musar, 54, a lawyer and former television presenter, won the second round in the presidential election in November.

With her swearing-in in parliament, she succeeded Borut Pahor, who was president for the last 10 years.

In her inaugural address, she expressed her dedication to the people of Slovenia and described herself as a defender of a strong Europe.

She called the challenges of climate change the main issues of her post.

According to local media, Musar is planning her first official visits to neighboring countries of the Western Balkans.

In Slovenia, the president's role is mainly ceremonial, though she is the commander-in-chief of the army.

She will nominate several top officials, including the central bank governor. Most of the nominations have to be confirmed by parliament.

Independent candidate Musar won 53.86% of the vote, while her top rival, Anze Logar, won about 46%.

The first round of the election was held Oct. 23 but none of the candidates won more than 50% of the ballots needed for an outright victory.
