NATO is significantly enhancing its defense industrial production and air defense capabilities through a new US-led military support program for Ukraine valued at $2.2 billion, according to Secretary General Mark Rutte. The announcement came during a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, where the alliance also addressed measures to protect its airspace from increasing drone threats and violations.

Rutte detailed that allies are "ramping up defense industrial production to make sure that Ukraine is as strong as possible, staying in the fight." The substantial aid package, launched in August, includes critical air defense systems and interceptors designed to protect Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure from ongoing Russian attacks. The day's agenda featured a NATO-Ukraine Council session with Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal and a Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting chaired by German and UK defense officials.

The NATO chief strongly affirmed the close coordination between the EU and NATO, asserting there is "no duplication of efforts" and that "Russia has not succeeded in dividing us." On the sensitive issue of Russian airspace violations, Rutte outlined NATO's firm but calibrated response protocol: "If a Russian aircraft enters NATO airspace and poses a threat, we will act. If not, it will be escorted out. A strong alliance knows when to act firmly and when to de-escalate."

Rutte specifically thanked US President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for their leadership in strengthening the alliance and ensuring more equitable burden-sharing among members. He described the decision to "equalize defense spending between the EU, Canada, and the US" as historic, noting that European allies and Canada had stepped up their commitments significantly. US Defense Secretary Hegseth reciprocated the praise, characterizing the progress as "peace through strength" and acknowledging Trump as "a peace president who seeks peace by standing with those who stand with the United States."
