NATO seeks clarity from US on troop withdrawal from Germany

NATO said it is working with the US to understand the details of Washington’s decision to withdraw troops from Germany, following a Pentagon announcement that approximately 5,000 US troops would be redeployed. The move comes amid growing transatlantic tensions over the Iran war and follows criticism of the US by German Chancellor Merz.
NATO announced on Saturday that it is engaging with Washington to understand the specifics of the US decision to withdraw troops from Germany. “We are working with the U.S. to understand the details of their decision on force posture in Germany,” NATO spokesperson Allison Hart wrote on X. She added that the “adjustment underscores the need for Europe to continue to invest more in defence and take on a greater share of the responsibility” for shared security. “We remain confident in our ability to provide for our deterrence and defence as this shift towards a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO continues,” Hart stated.
Troop withdrawal details
A Pentagon spokesman confirmed on Friday that the US defense chief has ordered the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 troops from Germany. Earlier this week, President Trump indicated that the US is assessing a possible reduction of its military presence in Germany amid a rift within NATO over his Iran war policy. Trump’s remarks followed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s criticism on Monday that the US lacks an exit strategy for the Iran war, claiming that Americans were being “humiliated” by the Iranian regime in negotiations.
