New York governor condemns Israeli minister's parade presence

Kathy Hochul said Bezalel Smotrich's participation in Sunday's Israel Day Parade contradicted New York values, calling the Israeli finance minister a 'far-right extremist' whose rhetoric has drawn international condemnation and alleged war crimes scrutiny from the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul on Monday condemned Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich's participation in the annual Israel Day Parade, characterizing him as a "far-right extremist" whose views clash with the state's principles. Hochul said in a post on the social media platform X that Sunday's event was meant to celebrate Jewish pride and unity, adding that she "strongly condemn[s] his participation."
Ministers' records
Smotrich, who serves in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, has faced international criticism for incendiary remarks regarding Palestinians — including advocating for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians and the use of nuclear weapons against Gaza. The International Criminal Court has reportedly filed a secret arrest warrant application against the minister over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied West Bank, including forced displacement and apartheid.
Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu, who also attended the parade alongside Smotrich, previously called for nuclear weapons to be used against Gaza and stated that Palestinians should starve. Eliyahu declared in previous remarks that "there is no problem bombing their food and fuel reserves," according to reports.

Local boycott
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani boycotted the parade — marking the first time in the event's history that a sitting mayor declined to attend. The boycott came as both ministers faced scrutiny over alleged violations of international law and inflammatory rhetoric targeting Palestinian civilians.
