Over 1,000 Palestinian athletes killed, 265 sports facilities destroyed in Gaza war

The Palestinian Olympic Committee reports that Israel's two-year military campaign has killed 1,007 sportspeople, including 45 women, and destroyed or damaged 265 facilities, devastating Gaza's athletic infrastructure and future.
The Palestinian Olympic Committee revealed Monday that Israel's genocidal war on Gaza has killed at least 1,007 Palestinian athletes and sports workers since October 2023, while destroying or damaging 265 sports facilities across the enclave. Committee vice president Asaad Al-Majdalawi addressed a press conference detailing the systematic devastation of Gaza's sporting life.
Women and Infrastructure Targeted
Majdalawi confirmed that 45 women were among the victims. The toll on infrastructure includes 184 sports facilities completely destroyed and 81 others partially damaged. "This destruction has deprived thousands of young people and adolescents of their right to train and practice sports," he stated, emphasizing the long-term consequences for Gaza's athletic development.
Beyond Statistics: Psychological and Economic Impact
The losses extend beyond physical infrastructure and casualties. Majdalawi highlighted psychological trauma among surviving athletes, disruption of sports development programs, reduced professional opportunities, and loss of income for countless sector workers. The destruction compounds Gaza's broader humanitarian catastrophe.
Ceasefire Context
A US-backed ceasefire has been in place since Oct. 10, halting Israel's two-year war that has killed over 72,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and wounded more than 171,000 since October 2023. However, Gaza's Health Ministry reports Israeli forces have committed hundreds of ceasefire violations through shelling and gunfire, killing 603 Palestinians and injuring 1,618 since the agreement took effect.
