Militants storm Karachi facility
The Pakistani military announced on Sunday that security forces concluded a clearance operation at a paramilitary facility in Karachi, one day after heavily armed assailants stormed the compound in an attack that killed three troops. The assault on the Rangers camp office in the city's eastern district began late Saturday with a blast at the main gate, followed by an attempted perimeter breach that was repelled by troops stationed inside. Three attackers were killed during the operation and a fourth was captured in injured condition, according to an army statement.
Casualties and responsibility
The captured militant is an Afghan national, the military said, adding that the assault left three paramilitary personnel dead and four others wounded while Jamaat ul Ahrar, a splinter faction of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Army vows retribution
"Pakistan shall undertake retribution operations against the perpetrators of this attack to avenge the Shahadat (martyrdom) of its soldiers," the army said. Army chief Field Marshall Asim Munir offered his "deepest" condolences to the families of the slain soldiers, stating: "These sacrifices further reinforce our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our nation at all costs." Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent years, with Islamabad repeatedly accusing neighboring Afghanistan of allowing its soil to be used by armed groups — allegations that Kabul consistently denies.
