Paris mayor seeks honorary citizenship for Palestinian civilians

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire plans to propose honorary citizenship for Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as Palestinian journalists, at the Paris Council in June. His office said Paris “chooses civilians over violence, law over arbitrariness, life over destruction.”
Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire is set to propose granting honorary citizenship to Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, alongside Palestinian journalists, according to Le Parisien. The mayor’s office confirmed to Le Nouvel Obs that the initiative will be presented to the Paris Council in June.
Symbolic gesture and message
In a statement, the mayor’s office said: “Paris has always associated its name with the freedom of peoples and human dignity. It chooses civilians over violence, law over arbitrariness, life over destruction.” The office also stressed the importance of honouring Palestinian journalists, adding: “Honouring them means honouring the fundamental right of societies to know the truth.”
The proposal comes amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, where thousands of Palestinian civilians have been killed and critical infrastructure destroyed. While the honorary citizenship is largely symbolic, it reflects growing municipal-level solidarity with Palestinians across European cities.
