Putin mourns slain Iranian security chief as 'true friend' of Russia

Russian president sends condolences to Supreme Leader Khamenei, praises Larijani's role in strengthening Moscow-Tehran strategic partnership.
Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his condolences Wednesday to Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei over the killing of security chief Ali Larijani, praising the slain official as a key partner in deepening ties between Moscow and Tehran. The message underscores Russia's alignment with Iran as the US-Israeli campaign against the Islamic Republic continues.
Warm tribute from Moscow
"Please accept our deepest condolences on the death of Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Larijani," Putin said in a message addressed to Khamenei published by Iranian broadcaster IRIB and reported by Russian news outlets including state news agency Tass. The Russian leader described Larijani as a "true friend" of Russia who contributed significantly to developing the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations and "will remain in our hearts." Putin asked Khamenei to "convey my sincere condolences and support to the deceased's family and friends."
Israeli strike confirmed
The Israeli military announced Tuesday that it had killed Larijani in a "precise strike" near Tehran overnight Monday. Iran's Supreme National Security Council subsequently confirmed that Larijani died in the attack along with his son, his aide Reza Bayat, and several companions. The killing represents one of the most significant blows to Iran's leadership structure since the US-Israeli offensive began Feb. 28.

Kremlin condemns targeting leaders
Earlier Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a press briefing in Moscow that Russia "strongly condemns actions aimed at causing harm to the health, or especially the murder and liquidation, of representatives of the leadership of sovereign Iran." The statement reflects Moscow's growing concern as its strategic partner suffers repeated decapitation strikes, with approximately 1,300 people killed including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous senior political and military figures since the conflict began.
