Qatar education summit urges human values amid AI revolution

The 12th World Innovation Summit for Education opened in Doha with strong calls to place human values at the center of learning systems during the artificial intelligence era. Qatari leaders and global experts warned that education must prioritize ethics and responsibility as AI transforms knowledge acquisition, stressing that technological progress requires moral guidance.
Global education leaders convened in Doha for the 12th World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE), where discussions centered on maintaining human values amid rapid artificial intelligence development. The Qatar Foundation initiative gathered experts at the Qatar National Convention Centre under the theme “Humanity.io: Human Values at the Heart of Education.”
Ethical Foundations of Education
Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation, opened the summit by highlighting how AI demands a fundamental reconsideration of education's purpose. “The pace of change now surpasses our limits and our ability to adapt. This reality brings risks that we can neither downplay nor ignore,” she stated. Emphasizing the danger of separating knowledge from morality, she warned that “when education is stripped of values and morality, it becomes clear how easily it can turn into absolute evil.”
National Progress Through Human-Centered Learning
Qatar's Minister of Education and Higher Education, Lolwah bint Rashid bin Mohammed Al Khater, reinforced this perspective, linking national advancement to human-centered approaches. “No matter how the world changes, the ability of nations to progress remains dependent on their ability to keep humanity at the heart of their vision and decisions,” she asserted. The minister described how placing humanity as both starting point and goal transforms challenges into opportunities for collaborative growth and deeper understanding.
AI's Transformative Potential and Risks
Former Google X Chief Business Officer Mo Gawdat challenged perceptions that AI's impact is exaggerated, arguing instead that its transformative power is underestimated. He pointed to AI's growing role in scientific discovery, including a Google AI model that recently identified new mathematical methods. Gawdat suggested future education will prioritize questioning over memorization, noting “The difference is not in the technology but in how we use it.” Author Laila Lalami highlighted storytelling's enduring power for delivering complex information and stressed the importance of preserving students' ability to learn through mistakes rather than relying on AI-generated answers.
