Qatar launches legal action against Israel over deadly Doha strike

Qatar has formally begun taking legal measures in response to an Israeli attack on its capital, Doha, that resulted in multiple casualties. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al-Muraikhi confirmed the development during the eighth ministerial meeting of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council Strategic Dialogue in Sochi, stating that Doha is pursuing all necessary legal avenues against what it terms "Israeli aggression."

The minister emphasized that Qatar would continue working alongside its strategic partners to uphold justice and defend international legitimacy. "We have been subjected to Israeli aggression that claimed innocent lives in violation of international norms," Al-Muraikhi said, warning that Israel's actions "reflect arrogance and recklessness and undermines efforts to resolve disputes peacefully." He placed full responsibility for escalating regional tensions on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, accusing it of destabilizing the Middle East.

UN Security Council to Convene Following Qatari Request

The legal announcement follows a formal letter sent by Qatar to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Sangjin Kim, South Korea's acting envoy currently chairing the Security Council. In that correspondence, Doha condemned the Israeli strike as a "cowardly" and "criminal act" that violated international law and posed a direct threat to Qatari sovereignty and security.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet later Thursday to address the situation, following an emergency session postponed from Wednesday at Qatar's request. The delay was arranged to allow Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to attend the discussions. Algeria and Pakistan had initially called for the session in response to the escalating crisis.

Mediator Role Complicated by Direct Attack

Türkiye continues to monitor the situation closely as the strike places additional strain on an already volatile region. Qatar has served as a key mediator in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas aimed at ending the conflict that has claimed over 64,700 lives in Gaza since October 2023. Hamas has confirmed that five of its members were killed in the attack on Doha, though its leadership survived the strike, further complicating the already fragile diplomatic landscape.
