Qatari Emir, Trump discuss US-Iran peace efforts amid ongoing mediation

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and President Trump discussed ongoing mediation efforts to end the US-Iran war, including support for Pakistan’s diplomatic push. They emphasized safeguarding maritime security, protecting strategic waterways, and ensuring global supply chains. The call came as Pakistan’s army chief visited Tehran to broker a deal on Hormuz, nuclear issues, and sanctions relief.
Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held a phone call with US President Donald Trump on Saturday to discuss ongoing mediation efforts aimed at ending the war between the US and Iran, the Qatari Amiri Diwan said. The two leaders reviewed regional developments, particularly international efforts to consolidate calm and de-escalate tensions. A statement emphasized support for “the diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan to spare the region further tension and preserve international peace and security.” They also stressed the importance of continuing dialogue to address current issues, safeguarding maritime security and the safety of strategic waterways, and ensuring the smooth flow of global supply and energy chains.
Qatar’s role
Sheikh Tamim reiterated Doha’s call for peaceful solutions and its support for all diplomatic efforts to contain the crisis and promote stability. Qatar has historically played a mediating role in regional conflicts, including hosting Taliban talks and engaging with Hamas. While Pakistan leads the current mediation, Qatar’s backing is significant given its close ties with both the US and Iran. The call came as Pakistan’s army chief visited Tehran to step up brokering efforts, with main sticking points including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program, and sanctions relief.
