Activists converged on Italy’s Foreign Ministry in Rome this weekend to demonstrate solidarity with the humanitarian flotilla recently intercepted by Israeli naval forces while attempting to deliver aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip. Representatives from the Global Sumud initiative vowed to relaunch the maritime mission despite the detention of 175 participants, condemning the operation as a grave breach of international maritime law.

Rome Demonstration Supports Blockade-Breaking Mission

Demonstrators convened outside Italy’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome on Saturday to express solidarity with the humanitarian aid convoy bound for Gaza that Israeli naval forces intercepted earlier this week on the high seas. Organizers from the Italian delegation of the
Global Sumud Flotilla
staged a press briefing directly in front of the government building, pledging to resume their maritime expedition despite the recent setbacks.

Addressing supporters and media representatives, expedition organizers confirmed that crews would utilize the coming days to repair damaged vessels and restore navigation equipment to full working order. Participants from Greece, Spain, the Netherlands and various other European nations have reportedly begun mobilizing to rejoin the effort, with organizers anticipating greater numbers than during the initial departure from Sicily.

Israeli Forces Seize Vessels in International Waters

The maritime interception occurred on Thursday near a Greek island approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, as the multi-vessel convoy approached its destination. According to statements issued by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, naval commandos detained 175 activists after seizing more than twenty vessels sailing under various European flags.

While authorities subsequently released the majority of detainees on the island of Crete, enabling many to travel onward to
Türkiye
, two individuals remain in custody for continued questioning. The incident marks the latest confrontation involving international activists attempting to breach the coastal enclosure surrounding the Palestinian territory.

Calls for Release and Legal Accountability

Maria Elena Delia
, serving as spokesperson for Global Sumud Italia, issued a forceful statement during the Roman demonstration demanding the immediate liberation of the remaining detainees. She characterized the maritime interception as an act of kidnapping committed in international waters against vessels flying the Italian flag, constituting a serious escalation in violations of maritime law.

Delia urged citizens throughout Europe to establish permanent protest encampments and apply sustained political pressure on their respective governments. Her remarks emphasized that the unpunished nature of such interceptions encourages further violations of international legal conventions governing freedom of navigation and humanitarian access.

Humanitarian Mission Challenges Gaza Siege

The relief expedition initially launched from Barcelona on April 12, with the primary fleet departing the Sicilian coast on April 26 carrying essential supplies for the besieged population. The initiative aims to challenge and ultimately break the comprehensive blockade that Israeli authorities have maintained around the Gaza Strip since 2007.

Organizers have consistently emphasized that their mission represents a non-violent response to what they describe as a collective punishment regime affecting millions of civilians. The flotilla’s routing through international waters was specifically chosen to assert the legal right to deliver humanitarian assistance to populations under military blockade.

Blockade and Military Offensive Continue

The Mediterranean territory remains under severe restrictions that have pushed its 2.4 million residents toward catastrophic food insecurity and humanitarian crisis conditions. Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have devastated the coastal enclave, resulting in mass casualties and the destruction of critical infrastructure.

International observers continue to monitor the situation as activist networks coordinate additional attempts to deliver aid through maritime corridors, despite the increasing risks of interception and detention by naval forces operating in Eastern Mediterranean waters.
