Russia and Ukraine trade accusations of major drone attacks before New Year

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of launching large-scale drone attacks in the final hours before New Year's Eve, with both sides reporting casualties and damage. The reciprocal strikes highlight the continued intensity of the conflict despite the holiday period.
Russian claims of downed drones and refinery damage
Russian authorities reported that a Ukrainian drone strike damaged an oil refinery in the port town of Tuapse in the Krasnodar region, injuring two people and causing a fire that was later extinguished. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 86 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 56 intercepted over the Black Sea.
Ukrainian reports of civilian injuries and infrastructure hits
Ukrainian officials reported civilian casualties from Russian attacks. The State Emergency Service said at least six people, including three children, were injured in the Odesa region after a residential building was struck. In Dnipropetrovsk region, two people were hospitalized following a drone attack that also damaged a power line, according to the local governor.
Conflicting air defense claims
Ukraine's Air Force presented a counter-narrative, asserting it had shot down 101 out of 127 drones launched by Russia overnight. As with most battlefield reports from the nearly four-year war, these figures and the details of the attacks could not be independently verified, underscoring the fog of war that persists around the conflict.
