The Kremlin has announced that President Vladimir Putin has received an invitation to participate in the new international "Board of Peace" focused on Gaza. Moscow is reviewing the proposal and seeking clarification from Washington on the details.
The Kremlin confirmed on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been formally invited to join a newly established U.S.-led international body aimed at resolving conflicts, starting with the Gaza crisis. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the invitation was delivered through diplomatic channels and that Moscow is currently examining the proposal.
A proposal under review in Moscow
During his daily press briefing, Peskov provided details on Russia's position. "Yes, indeed, President Putin also received, through diplomatic channels, an invitation to join this very Council of Peace," he said. "At the moment, we are examining all the details of this proposal, including hoping for contacts with the American side to clarify all the nuances." This cautious response indicates that while Russia is considering the offer, it seeks more information about the board's structure, mandate, and the role it would be expected to play before making a commitment.
The US framework for Gaza's transition
The invitation follows the White House's official announcement last Friday of the creation of the Board of Peace. According to the U.S. statement, the board is designed to "play an essential role in fulfilling" the 20-point plan of President Donald Trump to permanently end the war in Gaza and oversee the territory's reconstruction. The U.S. has also established a National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG) to implement the second phase of the peace plan, supported by an executive board. The overarching goal is to provide strategic oversight and mobilize international resources for Gaza's transition from conflict to development.
Expanding the diplomatic circle for a complex crisis
President Trump's outreach to President Putin represents a significant expansion of the diplomatic effort surrounding Gaza. This move comes after Trump also extended an invitation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to join the board as a founding member. Including two major powers with deep interests and influence in the Middle East—Russia and Türkiye—signals an attempt to create a broader, more inclusive international mechanism. For Türkiye, which has consistently advocated for Palestinian rights and a just, lasting peace, participating alongside other global actors could provide a platform to shape outcomes on the ground. However, the effectiveness of such a board will depend on the genuine alignment of its members' interests and their commitment to a solution that addresses the root causes of the conflict.
