Russia has responded to potential US military action in Nigeria by calling for strict adherence to international law. Moscow also declined to comment on Kazakhstan's planned accession to the Abraham Accords, highlighting shifting geopolitical alliances.

Russia has called on the United States to comply with international legal standards amid reports of potential American military intervention in Nigeria. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Friday that Moscow is closely monitoring the situation following President Donald Trump's announcement that he ordered the Pentagon to develop military options against terrorist groups in the African nation.

Monitoring US Military Planning

During a press briefing in Moscow, Zakharova responded to an Anadolu Agency question by emphasizing Russia's position on the emerging crisis. "We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms," she stated. The comments come after President Trump declared on November 1 that he had directed the Pentagon to prepare options for potential military measures in Nigeria, citing the protection of Christian communities as justification.

Diplomatic Neutrality on Kazakhstan

When questioned about Kazakhstan's intention to become the first Central Asian nation to join the Abraham Accords, the Russian spokeswoman maintained a position of diplomatic reserve. "Get a response from the country you mention, and then, if there need be, we'll comment on it," Zakharova told reporters. Her response indicates Moscow's cautious approach to the expanding normalization agreements between Arab states and Israel, particularly when involving countries within Russia's traditional sphere of influence.

Regional Implications and Strategic Positioning

The developments highlight the complex geopolitical landscape where major powers navigate relationships with African nations and former Soviet states. Russia's call for international law adherence in Nigeria contrasts with its own military operations elsewhere, while its neutral stance on Kazakhstan's diplomatic moves suggests a recalibrating approach to regional alliances. These positions emerge as the US expands both military planning in Africa and diplomatic initiatives in Central Asia through the Abraham Accords framework.
