Russian drone strike injures seven in Ukrainian apartment building

A Russian drone attack struck a nine-story residential building in northeastern Ukraine's Sumy region, injuring at least seven people and forcing the evacuation of 35 residents. The overnight strike caused extensive fires and structural damage in the city of Okhtyrka.
A Russian drone strike hit an apartment building in northeastern Ukraine early Monday, wounding at least seven civilians. The attack targeted a nine-story residential block in Okhtyrka, a city in the Sumy region located roughly 45 kilometers from the Russian border, an area frequently shelled in the ongoing war.
Extensive damage and evacuations reported
Sumy regional governor Oleh Hryhorov stated that the strike caused "extensive damage" to the high-rise building. Ukraine's State Emergency Service reported that fires erupted in apartments between the second and fifth floors, leading to the evacuation of 35 residents. Two of the seven injured individuals required hospitalization, with assessments of the building's structural integrity still ongoing.
Large-scale overnight aerial assaults
The incident was part of a major overnight aerial offensive by Russian forces. Ukraine's Air Force reported that its air defense systems intercepted 131 out of 149 drones launched by Russia across the country. In a separate claim, Russia's Defense Ministry stated its own air defenses had shot down 67 Ukrainian drones overnight, though it did not comment on the specific attack in Okhtyrka.
Context of the prolonged border conflict
Okhtyrka's proximity to the Russian frontier has made it a recurrent target during the more than three-and-a-half-year conflict. Strikes on civilian infrastructure in border regions like Sumy have become a common feature of the war, highlighting the persistent threat to non-combatants far from the front lines. This attack underscores the continued use of explosive drones to target urban areas.
