A massive Russian air attack on the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil has killed at least 19 people and injured 66 others, with rescue operations continuing. Ukraine reported one of the largest combined drone and missile assaults in recent months, while Moscow claimed it targeted military-industrial facilities in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.

A devastating Russian missile and drone attack struck the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, killing at least 19 civilians and injuring 66 others in one of the most intense aerial bombardments in recent months. The assault targeted residential buildings, sparking large-scale fires and trapping numerous people under rubble as emergency services worked to rescue survivors.

Rescue operations and damage assessment

Ukrainian rescue services reported saving 45 people from destroyed buildings as operations continued throughout Wednesday. The State Emergency Service deployed more than 190 personnel with 38 equipment units to address damage to residential high-rises, industrial sites, and warehouse facilities. The death toll rose from initial reports of 10 fatalities as rescue teams progressed through the wreckage.

Scale of the aerial assault

The Ukrainian Air Force detailed an extensive attack involving 524 missiles and drones launched from multiple directions, primarily targeting the Lviv, Ternopil, and Kharkiv regions. According to military officials, air defense systems successfully intercepted 483 of the incoming threats, including 442 drones, 34 Kh-101 cruise missiles, and seven Kalibr missiles. The assault began Tuesday evening and utilized various weapon systems including Shahed drones and hypersonic missiles.

Conflicting claims about targets

While Ukraine documented extensive civilian casualties and damage to residential infrastructure, Moscow presented a different account of the operation. The Russian Defense Ministry described conducting a "massive strike with long-range precision weapons" against what it identified as Ukrainian military-industrial and energy facilities. Russian officials characterized the attack as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian sites, claiming all designated targets were successfully hit, though these assertions could not be independently verified.
