Russia's security chief Sergey Shoygu visits Myanmar for talks on military, political cooperation

Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu has arrived in Myanmar for high-level meetings with the country's leadership, focusing on security, military-technical cooperation, and bilateral coordination following Myanmar's recent parliamentary elections.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoygu arrived in Myanmar on Monday at the head of an interdepartmental delegation for talks with the country’s top leadership. The Russian Security Council stated that Shoygu was received at the airport by Russia’s ambassador to Myanmar, Iskander Azizov, and Myanmar’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ko Ko Kyaw.
High-Level Meetings Planned
During his working visit, Shoygu is scheduled to meet Myanmar’s Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, as well as the First Minister of the Presidential Office and National Security Advisor Tin Aung San. The visit follows Myanmar’s parliamentary elections held on January 25, which Russia said it recognizes as having taken place in accordance with international law. The polls are expected to transition power from the military to civilian authorities elected by parliament.
Broad Agenda for Bilateral Cooperation
The agenda covers a wide range of bilateral issues, including national and regional security, military and military-technical cooperation, trade and economic interaction, and coordination on international affairs. Discussions will also extend to cooperation between intelligence and law enforcement agencies, financial intelligence, justice ministries, and Russia’s National Guard (Rosgvardia). Shoygu is also expected to visit a memorial complex dedicated to fallen heroes in Myanmar during his stay.
