Defense ministry confirms interceptions but provides no details on casualties or damage as Gulf states face sustained aerial attacks.

Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed 13 drones over the capital Riyadh and the Eastern Province on Wednesday, the Defense Ministry announced, as Iran's retaliatory campaign against US targets continues to draw Gulf states deeper into the conflict. The kingdom has become a frequent target of the aerial barrages.

Continued aerial assaults

The ministry confirmed the latest interceptions but offered no information regarding potential injuries or damage from the attacks. The lack of detail follows a pattern of sparse official commentary on the impacts of strikes that have repeatedly targeted Saudi territory since Iran began retaliating against the US-Israeli offensive that began Feb. 28. The Eastern Province, home to critical energy infrastructure, has been particularly exposed to the ongoing campaign.

Regional conflict intensifies

Saudi Arabia's downing of Iranian drones comes as part of a broader pattern of aerial warfare engulfing the Gulf region. Since the US and Israel launched their joint offensive against Iran, which has killed approximately 1,300 people including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Tehran has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting American military assets across Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries. The attacks have caused casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation.

Gulf states in crossfire

For Saudi Arabia and its Gulf neighbors, the conflict presents an escalating security challenge as they find themselves caught between their strategic partnership with Washington and Iran's determination to strike US assets wherever they are positioned in the region. Wednesday's interception of 13 drones over major population and economic centers underscores the persistent threat facing the kingdom as the war enters its third week with no resolution in sight.
