Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a drone in the kingdom's eastern region early Monday, the Defense Ministry announced. The incident marks the latest in a series of aerial attacks targeting Gulf states as Iran's retaliatory campaign against US-Israeli strikes continues to expand.

Saudi Arabia's military successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone in the eastern region of the kingdom early Monday, the Saudi Defense Ministry announced in a statement on social media platform X. The ministry spokesperson confirmed the interception but provided no additional details about the drone's origin or intended target.

Regional conflict continues to widen

The drone interception comes as the US-Israeli joint offensive against Iran, launched Feb. 28, enters its third week with no resolution in sight. The campaign has killed approximately 1,300 people, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and triggered widespread Iranian retaliation across the region. Tehran has consistently targeted Gulf states hosting US military assets with drone and missile strikes, drawing nations including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE into the expanding conflict.

Gulf states on high alert

Saudi Arabia joins a growing list of Gulf nations that have been forced to activate air defense systems against Iranian projectiles in recent weeks. The repeated interceptions highlight both the geographic reach of Iran's drone program and the critical role of Gulf air defense networks in protecting civilian populations and vital infrastructure from the escalating aerial war. As the conflict shows no signs of abating, regional states remain on high alert for continued attacks.
