Shooting at Kentucky State University leaves one student dead, one injured

A shooting at Kentucky State University (KSU) has left one student dead and another critically injured, according to officials and local news reports. The incident occurred on Tuesday at the university located in Frankfort, Kentucky, with both victims confirmed to be KSU students, while the suspected gunman is not affiliated with the institution.

Arrest and Charges Against the Suspect

University police apprehended the suspect at the scene following the shooting. He was later identified as Jacob Lee Bard, a resident of Evansville, Indiana. Bard was booked into the Franklin County Regional Jail on charges of murder and first-degree assault. The swift arrest prevented further violence on the campus.

Official Characterization as a Targeted Attack

State and local authorities moved quickly to characterize the nature of the shooting. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy both stated that the incident appeared to be targeted. "This was not a mass shooting or a random incident," Governor Beshear emphasized in a video statement. The wounded student was transported to a hospital and reported to be in critical but stable condition.

Context of Prior Campus Violence

This shooting marks the second such violent incident at KSU this year. In August, two students were shot near Young Hall when an individual in a passing vehicle opened fire on a group walking on campus.
