Madrid says homes and health facilities can never be considered military targets under international law, warns against threats to Lebanon's territorial unity.

pain issued a sharp condemnation Monday of Israeli authorities' statements regarding alleged military plans to target infrastructure and civilian areas in Lebanon. The Spanish Foreign Ministry described the reported plans as a "flagrant and premeditated violation of international humanitarian law."

Civilian targets rejected

"The Spanish Government expresses its strongest condemnation of statements by Israeli authorities claiming that the Israeli army has been ordered to destroy all bridges over the Litani River, as well as the homes of Lebanese civilians in neighbouring villages," the ministry said in a statement. It stressed that civilian infrastructure, including homes and health care facilities, "can never, under international law, be considered military targets," adding that "such actions violate the most basic principles of international humanitarian law, destroying the lives of innocent civilians."

Territorial integrity defended

Spain also warned against any moves affecting Lebanon's territorial unity. "Spain categorically reiterates its condemnation of any attempt to isolate and divide Lebanese territory, and urges respect for Lebanon's territorial integrity and sovereignty," the ministry said. Madrid called on the international community to prevent "impunity for these actions" and to strengthen support for the Lebanese government's efforts to consolidate sovereignty and territorial integrity under its authority.

Growing international concern

The Spanish condemnation adds to mounting international alarm over the expansion of the conflict, which began Feb. 28 with US-Israeli strikes on Iran. Israel's military operations in Lebanon have intensified in recent weeks, raising fears of a broader regional war that could inflict devastating civilian casualties and further destabilize an already fragile region.
