Sudan says RSF destroyed over 1,800 factories in Khartoum

Sudan's Industry Minister has revealed that paramilitary forces destroyed 1,877 factories in Khartoum during the recent conflict, causing complete industrial collapse. The systematic targeting of energy infrastructure has prevented production resumption, forcing Sudan to import basic necessities.
Sudan's industrial sector has suffered catastrophic damage with over 1,800 factories destroyed by paramilitary forces during the recent conflict in Khartoum, according to official government assessments. Industry and Trade Minister Mahasen Ali Yaqoub disclosed that comprehensive damage surveys conducted after the army regained control of the capital revealed extensive and systematic destruction of manufacturing infrastructure.
Systematic Industrial Destruction
Minister Yaqoub provided detailed figures during a press conference in Port Sudan, reporting that 1,877 factories in Khartoum State sustained damage, with 553 completely destroyed and 1,267 partially damaged. She emphasized that the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) specifically targeted industrial infrastructure, particularly energy equipment and systems, in what appeared to be a deliberate strategy to prevent the resumption of manufacturing operations in the capital region.
Complete Industrial Collapse
The minister described the consequences as devastating, noting that "the industrial sector has sustained massive and systematic damage, leading to a complete cessation of the industry in Khartoum, Al-Jazira, and Sennar." The destruction has "completely paralyzed the industrial sector" throughout Sudan, forcing the country to import even the most basic manufactured goods and commodities that were previously produced domestically.
Ongoing Conflict and Territorial Control
The industrial damage assessment follows the Sudanese army's announcement in May 2025 that it had regained full control over Khartoum state after intense fighting with the RSF. The conflict between the national army and the paramilitary group, which began on April 15, 2023, has resulted in thousands of casualties and displaced millions of Sudanese citizens. Currently, the RSF maintains control over all five states in the Darfur region, while government forces hold most of the remaining thirteen states, including the capital Khartoum.
