Sudan's Burhan vows revenge against RSF for civilian killings

Sudan's military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has pledged to exact revenge for civilians killed by paramilitary forces, specifically naming atrocities in El-Fasher and Geneina. The army commander promised to crush the rebel militia and secure the country's borders amid ongoing conflict that has divided control of Sudan's territories.
Sudan's top military commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has sworn retaliation against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for widespread civilian casualties in the country's ongoing civil war. The Sudanese army leader made his declaration during meetings with military commanders, signaling no end to the conflict that has ravaged the African nation since April 2023.
A Pledge of Retribution
In strongly worded remarks, Burhan committed to avenging those killed in multiple cities where the RSF has been accused of atrocities. "We will avenge those who were killed and brutalized in El-Fasher, Geneina, Al-Jazira, and other cities and areas that were violated by the RSF militia," he stated. The general reaffirmed the army's determination to eliminate what he termed a rebel force and secure Sudan's territorial integrity.
The RSF's Territorial Gains
The paramilitary group has achieved significant military advances, including capturing El-Fasher, the strategic capital of North Darfur state. This victory has raised international concerns about potential partition of Sudan, with the RSF now controlling all five states in the Darfur region while government forces maintain authority over most other territories, including the capital Khartoum.
Documented Atrocities and Conflict Toll
United Nations reports have documented extensive violence, estimating that between 10,000-15,000 people were killed in Geneina alone during ethnic-based violence perpetrated by the RSF and allied militias. The conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions nationwide, with regional and international mediation efforts failing to produce a sustainable ceasefire.
