Switzerland eyes European SAMP/T missile system as US Patriot deliveries stall

Switzerland is considering the Franco-Italian SAMP/T air defense system as an alternative to American Patriots after Washington indefinitely postponed delivery of five batteries due to Ukraine priorities. The potential shift carries financial risks including a $770 million down payment and possible penalties affecting F-35 procurement.
Switzerland is actively exploring European alternatives to the US-made Patriot air defense system following Washington's indefinite postponement of five missile batteries ordered by Bern, local media reported Monday. The delay, attributed to prioritizing supplies for Ukraine, has left Swiss officials uncertain whether the Patriot systems will ever arrive and prompted examination of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T platform developed through the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation.
European Alternative Timeline and Political Support
Manufacturers have indicated they could deliver the SAMP/T system by 2029 should Switzerland place an immediate order, according to NZZ am Sonntag. Green Party parliamentarian Clarence Chollet expressed strong interest, telling reporters he views "this European alternative very favorably" given that Patriot systems "will not arrive in Switzerland for years, or perhaps not at all." Defense ministry deputy secretary general Robert Scheidegger confirmed the government will discuss the matter in the Federal Council before any public decision.
Financial and Diplomatic Complications
Abandoning the US deal carries significant financial exposure, with Switzerland having already paid approximately CHF700 million ($770 million) as down payment. Swiss People's Party lawmaker Mauro Tuena warned that contract withdrawal could trigger penalties potentially affecting Switzerland's planned acquisition of US-made F-35 fighter jets. The Patriot delivery timeline remains uncertain beyond 2030, with final costs unclear. Political frustration across party lines is growing as Switzerland confronts prolonged uncertainty over its air defense modernization.
