Australian media also raised claims that a third person was involved in the attack.

A shooting attack targeting a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney has killed at least 16 people and wounded 40. Police have declared it a terrorist incident, with one attacker killed and another critically wounded; a civilian hero intervened to disarm one gunman.

A mass shooting targeting a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach has been declared a terrorist act by Australian authorities, with at least 16 fatalities and 40 injuries. The attack occurred as a group gathered to light the first candle of the holiday on Sunday, resulting in one of the deadliest acts of violence in Australia in decades.

Police response and investigation details

New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed the incident is being treated as terrorism and reported that officers killed one attacker, while a second was critically wounded. Police discovered what they believe to be homemade explosive devices in a vehicle near the scene. While a third possible assailant has not been confirmed, Commissioner Lanyon stated investigators are scouring every possibility. Local media, citing unnamed officials, identified one suspect as Naveed Akram from the Bonnyrigg area.

Condemnation and political reactions

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the situation as "shocking and tragic." The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) strongly condemned the "tragic and horrifying" attack, affirming the right of every person to live in peace regardless of religion. Meanwhile, the Israeli government made controversial claims, attempting to link the attack to Australia's criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza.

Heroic intervention by a civilian

Amid the chaos, a civilian, identified as 43-year-old Syrian-born fruit seller Ahmed al-Ahmed, intervened bravely. Video footage shows him approaching one gunman, seizing his rifle, and disarming him, an act credited with preventing further casualties. Ahmed was shot twice during the intervention and hospitalized, with his actions drawing widespread praise, including from US President Donald Trump.
