Syria's Interior Ministry has deployed additional security forces to protect churches in Christian-majority towns ahead of Easter, following clashes between Muslim and Christian youth in the town of Al-Suqaylabiyah in central Hama province. The violence, which escalated from a verbal dispute, targeted churches and businesses before security forces restored order.
Syria's Interior Ministry has mobilized security forces to protect churches in Christian-majority areas following clashes between Muslim and Christian youth in Al-Suqaylabiyah, a town in central Hama province, that escalated into widespread violence. The ministry deployed additional security personnel outside churches in towns with significant Christian populations, including Maaloula north of Damascus, where residents welcomed security forces with refreshments.
Clashes in Al-Suqaylabiyah
Last Thursday, a verbal dispute between a Muslim youth from the neighboring town of Qalaat al-Madiq and a Christian youth in Al-Suqaylabiyah quickly escalated into a mass brawl, followed by attacks on Christian-owned businesses and churches. Security forces brought the situation under control and arrested six individuals. Following the incidents, tribal leaders and prominent figures from both towns held meetings to de-escalate tensions.
Easter security measures
The heightened security measures come ahead of Easter, with authorities concerned about possible attacks on churches during the holiday period. The Interior Ministry's response reflects the new Syrian administration's efforts to maintain order and protect religious minorities following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024.

Interfaith relations
The clashes in Hama province highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining communal harmony in Syria, where sectarian tensions have been exacerbated by years of civil war. The swift intervention by local leaders to de-escalate tensions suggests recognition of the need for stability in the post-Assad transition period.
