Syria dismantle Daesh cell in Idlib province

Syrian security forces have arrested an eight-member terrorist cell linked to the Daesh group in the northern province of Idlib. The Interior Ministry stated the cell was behind attacks on security and military patrols in Idlib and Aleppo, incidents which resulted in multiple casualties earlier this week.
Syria's Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday the arrest of an eight-person cell operating in northern Syria and affiliated with the Daesh terrorist organization. The group was captured in Idlib province and is accused of carrying out attacks against state security forces, according to a statement carried by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Connection to recent attacks
The ministry linked the detained cell to a series of assaults on security and military patrols in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo. These incidents included an attack on Sunday in the city of Maaret al-Numan, located in southern Idlib countryside, which resulted in the deaths of four security personnel. Another officer was injured by gunfire in Aleppo the following day.
Security efforts in a volatile region
The operation occurs as Syria's administration continues efforts to assert control and stabilize conditions across the country following significant political changes. The northern Idlib province remains a complex and volatile security zone, with various militant groups active in the area. The dismantling of this cell represents a targeted action against one such threat.
Regional security implications
While the primary focus of the announcement is on domestic security, the presence and activity of Daesh-affiliated cells in regions near the Turkish border underscore ongoing regional security challenges. Türkiye, which shares a long border with Syria, has consistently emphasized the threat posed by terrorist groups in northern Syria and has conducted its own cross-border counter-terrorism operations in the past.
