Syrian security forces have neutralized explosives and suicide drones allegedly planted by the SDF in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood and discovered large weapon stockpiles. The operation follows recent clashes that caused mass displacement.

Syrian authorities have announced the discovery and neutralization of a significant cache of explosives and weaponry allegedly planted by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Aleppo's Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. According to a statement from the Interior Ministry, specialized teams conducting security sweeps dismantled devices described as "prepared for terrorist use," including car bombs, suicide drones, and improvised explosive devices placed inside homes and along streets.

Details of the Seized Arsenal

The ministry reported that its teams safely disposed of a booby-trapped rocket and transferred other explosives to secure locations. During the security operations, internal security units also uncovered what they termed "large warehouses" containing substantial quantities of SDF weapons. The seized items reportedly included landmines, rockets, shells, grenades, and various types of ammunition, which the government labeled a "direct threat to public security and civilian safety."

Background of Violence and Broken Agreements

This clearance operation follows intense fighting in Aleppo that, according to official figures, killed 24 people, wounded nearly 130, and displaced approximately 165,000 residents from the Ashrafieh and Sheikh Maqsoud districts since Tuesday. The SDF's actions starkly violate multiple agreements, including a March 2025 integration pact and an April 2025 deal specifically for these neighborhoods that required the SDF's military withdrawal to areas east of the Euphrates River.

Validation of Türkiye's Security Concerns

The discovery of these explosives and stockpiled weapons in a civilian area validates Türkiye's longstanding warnings that the PKK/YPG terrorist network—which forms the SDF's core—employs indiscriminate and treacherous tactics, embedding threats within urban populations. It reinforces Ankara's position that the group is a fundamental obstacle to peace and stability in Syria and justifies Türkiye's cross-border security operations to eliminate such terrorist threats along its southern frontier.
