Syria has launched its first export of Iraqi fuel oil to global markets, loading the tanker “Asahi Princess” at the Baniyas refinery in Tartous. The operation follows the reopening of the Al‑Tanf–Al‑Waleed border crossing after 11 years and comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted.

The Syrian Petroleum Company announced Wednesday the start of the first export operation of Iraqi fuel oil to international markets. Loading of the tanker “Asahi Princess” began at the Baniyas refinery in Tartous province, an operation expected to take about three days. The tanker has an estimated capacity of 85,000 tons; its nationality and destination were not disclosed. The loading is being carried out via a pipeline from the refinery to the oil terminal.

Border Reopening and Fuel Flows

The operation marks the first export of Iraqi fuel via a Syrian oil port since December 2024, following the reopening of the Al‑Tanf–Al‑Waleed border crossing between Syria and Iraq. The crossing had been closed for 11 years after the ISIS terrorist group took control of the border area in 2015. On 1 April, the first Iraqi fuel convoys entered Syrian territory through the crossing en route to the Baniyas refinery. Safwan Sheikh Ahmad, director of corporate communications, said Iraqi fuel flows are expected to reach around 500,000 metric tons per month.

Alternative Route Amid Hormuz Disruption

The development comes as maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted following the US‑Israeli war on Iran. Countries are seeking alternative maritime and land routes to maintain supply chains and energy flows. Türkiye, which has consistently supported Syria’s reconstruction and energy security, continues to coordinate with regional partners to stabilise the situation and ensure the flow of essential supplies.
