Trump announces two-week suspension of Iran strikes after Pakistan mediation

President Trump announced a two-week suspension of military action against Iran following discussions with Pakistani leaders, contingent on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Talks are set to begin in Islamabad on Friday, with Trump saying the US received a 10-point proposal from Iran that is "a workable basis" for negotiation.
US President Donald Trump announced Tuesday a two-week suspension of military action against Iran following discussions with Pakistani leaders. Trump said that after conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, he agreed to halt planned strikes, contingent on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz "completely, immediately, and safely."
Ceasefire announcement
"I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided ceasefire!" he wrote on Truth Social. He noted that US military objectives have already been met and that the two-week pause would allow both sides to finalize a comprehensive agreement. Trump said the US received a 10-point proposal from Iran and "believes it is a workable basis on which to negotiate."
Islamabad talks
Sharif announced that the US and Iran, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire across all conflict zones, including Lebanon. "With the greatest humility, I am pleased to announce that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States of America, along with their allies, have agreed to an immediate ceasefire everywhere including Lebanon and elsewhere, effective immediately," he said on X. Sharif invited delegations to Islamabad on Friday "to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes."

Israeli position
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel supports Trump's decision to suspend military strikes against Iran for two weeks. "Israel supports President Trump's decision to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks subject to Iran immediately opening the straits and stopping all attacks on the US, Israel and countries in the region," the office said on X. Netanyahu's office said the two-week ceasefire "does not include Lebanon," however.
Conflict context
The entire region has been on alert since Israel and the US launched a weeks-long offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,400 people according to Iranian authorities, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
