Syria seeks closer ties with Canada after diplomatic shift, plans visit

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a telephone conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Thursday, marking a significant step in Damascus's ongoing efforts to reintegrate into the international community. Minister al-Shaibani reportedly expressed his government's gratitude for Canada's humanitarian support to the Syrian people over the past 14 years and its role in reconstruction efforts. The Syrian diplomat also conveyed his intention to undertake an official visit to Canada in the coming year, aiming to "open broader prospects" for partnership between the two nations. During the call, Minister Anand acknowledged the "positive impacts" of Syria's recent achievements on stability and civilian life. She confirmed the Canadian government's support, referencing Ottawa's recent policy shift to de-list Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism and to lift the specific designation on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS was a leading armed faction during the Syrian civil war. The move is seen as a pivotal step enabling deeper diplomatic and economic engagement.
