Syria seeks closer ties with Canada after diplomatic shift, plans visit

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani

In a notable diplomatic move, Syria's Foreign Minister spoke with Canada's counterpart, discussing enhanced cooperation and a potential official visit to Ottawa next year. The call follows Canada's decision to remove Syria from its terrorism sponsors list.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani held a telephone conversation with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Thursday, marking a significant step in Damascus's ongoing efforts to reintegrate into the international community. The discussion centered on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across multiple sectors, according to Syria's state-run SANA news agency.

Post-conflict diplomacy and Canadian support

Minister al-Shaibani reportedly expressed his government's gratitude for Canada's humanitarian support to the Syrian people over the past 14 years and its role in reconstruction efforts. The Syrian diplomat also conveyed his intention to undertake an official visit to Canada in the coming year, aiming to "open broader prospects" for partnership between the two nations. This outreach occurs amidst a wider diplomatic campaign by Damascus following major political changes in the region.

Shifting policies and group designation

During the call, Minister Anand acknowledged the "positive impacts" of Syria's recent achievements on stability and civilian life. She confirmed the Canadian government's support, referencing Ottawa's recent policy shift to de-list Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism and to lift the specific designation on Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). HTS was a leading armed faction during the Syrian civil war. The move is seen as a pivotal step enabling deeper diplomatic and economic engagement.

Agreed areas for future collaboration

The two top diplomats agreed on the importance of advancing ties in key areas including economy, investment, demining, and transitional justice. The Syrian Foreign Ministry framed the discussion as part of consistent efforts to deepen Syria's international engagements and broaden cooperation with friendly states, actions it claims serve Syrian national interests and promote stability. The development underscores the changing geopolitical landscape in the Eastern Mediterranean, where Türkiye remains a key regional power and stakeholder in Syria's future.
