Syrian army warns of harsh response to YPG/SDF moves in Eastern Aleppo

The Syrian Arab Army has issued a stern warning that it will respond decisively to any military action by the Kurdish-led YPG/SDF (People's Protection Units/Syrian Democratic Forces), which it designates as a terrorist organization.
In a statement released through the state news agency SANA, the army's Operations Command reported observing a dangerous military buildup by the YPG/SDF in the eastern countryside of Aleppo, specifically around the towns of Maskana and Deir Hafer.
The army claims that new armed groups, described as reinforcements, have recently arrived at these positions.
According to Syrian military officials, these reinforcements include "members of the PKK and remnants of the former regime." This language links the YPG—which Türkiye and Syria view as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)—to both an external terrorist group and loyalists of the overthrown Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad.
The army statement characterized this fortification as "a dangerous escalation" and emphasized that its forces on the ground are monitoring the situation directly and continuously.
"The Syrian army will respond to any military move by these groups with a firm and harsh response," the officials stated. They concluded with a strong declaration of intent: "The Syrian army will not stand idly by in the face of these developments."
Context & Implications
This warning highlights the ongoing and complex struggle for control in northern and eastern Syria. The Syrian government, having reconquered most major cities, increasingly views the YPG/SDF-held territories as a challenge to its sovereignty. The statement signals potential military intentions to reclaim these areas and serves as a message to other involved powers, including Türkiye, Russia, and the United States, which have varying levels of engagement with the different factions in the region. The threat of a new front opening in Aleppo's countryside raises the risk of further escalation in Syria's long-running war.
