Civilians displaced for years by conflict have started returning to the eastern Aleppo town of Deir Hafir, following the withdrawal of the YPG/SDF militant group and the Syrian Army’s establishment of full control. Residents interviewed described profound relief and joy at being able to finally go back to their homes, marking a tentative step toward restoring normal life in the area.
Syrian civilians are returning to their homes in the town of Deir Hafir in eastern Aleppo province, following the retreat of the YPG/SDF militant organization and the Syrian Arab Army’s consolidation of control over the area. The returns mark a significant moment for families who had been displaced for years due to the conflict.
Military Consolidation Enables Returns
The Syrian Army announced on Saturday that it had taken full control of Deir Hafir and the nearby city of Maskanah, east of Aleppo, after the YPG/SDF forces withdrew toward areas east of the Euphrates River. This military development opened the way for the first waves of displaced residents to come back to the town, which had been under the control of the militant group.
Voices of Returning Residents
Among those returning, Kays Abu Hamdan told reporters that going back to Deir Hafir brought “indescribable happiness.” Another returnee, Juma Hammadi, said he was finally reunited with his home after years of suffering, calling it their “happiest day.” Ahmed Mustafa recounted being forced to migrate under harsh conditions to Aleppo city and undertaking difficult journeys back as soon as they heard the town was accessible. Halit Abu Mustafa and Hasan Abu Musa similarly expressed overwhelming emotion and renewed hope for lasting peace and safety for Syrians.
Rebuilding Lives Amid Ongoing Challenges
As civilians flow back into Deir Hafir, efforts are underway to restore basic services and normalcy. The process of rebuilding homes and livelihoods begins under the security provided by the Syrian state forces. The returns around Deir Hafir represent a localized but symbolically important step in the wider context of stabilizing regions of Syria after years of conflict and militant control.
