Syrian rescue teams save 25 from flash floods in Homs province

Emergency crews in Syria rescued 25 people, mostly women and children, from flooded homes in rural Homs after heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, stranding families overnight.
Syrian civil defense teams successfully rescued 25 individuals trapped by severe flash flooding in the central province of Homs, officials announced Tuesday. The operations focused on the village of Um Jame’ in the Tal Kalakh region, where an overflowing river stranded families on rooftops overnight.
Overnight Rescues Amid Rising Waters
Emergency and Disaster Management Minister Raed Saleh stated that crews first rescued 12 people—including seven women, three children, and two elderly men—from one home on Monday. In a subsequent overnight operation, they saved a second family of 13, again predominantly women and children, from another flooded house in the same village. Saleh confirmed no other civilians remained trapped in the immediate area following the rescues.
Broader Weather Response Across Northern Syria
The flooding incident occurred amid a broader period of intense winter weather affecting Syria. State media reported that heavy rains and snowfall have caused additional incidents, including a house collapse in the village of Maghar al-Hammam in Idlib province, though no casualties were reported from that event. In Idlib city and surrounding areas, emergency teams have been responding to multiple weather-related calls, draining stormwater, clearing drainage channels, and pumping water from several displacement camps vulnerable to flooding.
Authorities Urge Caution as Weather Continues
Syrian authorities have issued warnings urging residents to avoid flood channels and valleys as the severe weather continues. The Civil Defense emphasized it remains on full, 24-hour alert to respond to further emergencies. The rescues highlight the persistent vulnerability of communities, especially in rural and displacement settings, to extreme weather events in a country where infrastructure has been severely degraded by years of conflict.
