Syria's Sharaa pledges national rebuilding on anniversary of Assad's fall

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has vowed to lead the country into a new phase of national reconstruction, marking one year since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad. Speaking at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, he promised to restore Syria's strength with a focus on justice and support for the vulnerable. The transitional administration faces immense challenges after a long conflict.
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has pledged a comprehensive national rebuilding effort as the country marks the first anniversary of former leader Bashar al-Assad's ouster. In a speech delivered at the historic Umayyad Mosque in Damascus on Monday, Sharaa declared that Syria is entering a decisive new phase focused on restoration and recovery, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Symbolic Speech and Promises of Resilience
Dressed in military attire following dawn prayers, President Sharaa addressed the nation with a message of defiance and unity. "No one, no matter how great, will stand in our way. No obstacle will stop us, and together we will face every challenge, God willing," he told Syrians. He framed the reconstruction as a mission to restore the country's strength and honor its ancient heritage "from its north to its south, and from its east to its west."
Focus on Social Justice and Diplomatic Gestures
The president outlined that the forthcoming period would prioritize "supporting the vulnerable, and ensuring justice among people." In a notable symbolic act reported by SANA, Sharaa placed a piece of the Kaaba's cloth, a gift from Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, inside the Umayyad Mosque. This gesture hints at evolving diplomatic relations in the region following the political transition.
Background of the Political Transition
The anniversary commemorates the dramatic shift that occurred last December when Bashar al-Assad, who ruled for nearly a quarter-century under the Baath Party, fled to Russia, ending a regime in power since 1963. President Sharaa's transitional administration was subsequently formed in January, tasked with steering the war-torn nation toward stability. The success of his ambitious rebuilding pledge remains contingent on securing lasting peace and international support, factors of critical importance to neighboring Türkiye's security and regional policy.
