The Council on American-Islamic Relations in Texas has strongly criticized Governor Greg Abbott's directive to investigate alleged sharia courts, calling it an unconstitutional assault on religious freedom. CAIR-Texas described the governor's claims about Islamic tribunals in North Texas as baseless conspiracy theories.

A prominent Muslim civil rights organization has launched a forceful condemnation of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's recent directive calling for an investigation into what he described as "sharia courts" operating in the state. The Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Texas) characterized the governor's demand as an unconstitutional attack on religious freedom rooted in debunked anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.

Religious Freedom Concerns

CAIR-Texas issued a detailed statement arguing that attempting to ban sharia law would be equivalent to prohibiting Jewish halacha or Catholic canon law, representing what they called a "direct assault" on fundamental religious rights protected by the First Amendment. The organization accused Governor Abbott of showing "disregard for the First Amendment" and demonstrating an "obsession with Texas Muslims" while attempting to shield the Israeli government from criticism.

Pattern of Controversial Directives

The latest controversy follows Governor Abbott's recent proclamation designating CAIR as a "foreign terrorist organization," a move the Muslim advocacy group described as "unconstitutional and error-riddled." According to CAIR-Texas, the governor's actions represent a series of failed attempts to penalize Texans who have criticized Israel or refused to sign pro-Israel pledges, now escalating to targeting religious practices.

Baseless Claims and Legal Standing

Governor Abbott's order specifically accused unnamed "Sharia tribunals" in North Texas of "masquerading" as legal courts and allegedly issuing orders that circumvent US law. However, CAIR-Texas maintains these claims involve "imaginary" institutions and represent politically motivated allegations without factual basis. The organization has vowed to continue defending the constitutional rights of Texas Muslims against what it characterizes as the governor's "desperate" attempts to undermine religious freedom.
