Trump and Zelenskyy hold talks with Europe on Ukraine war peace

US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European figures held a coordinated phone call to advance steps toward ending the Russia-Ukraine war. Participants said the discussion focused on concrete measures, security guarantees and shared responsibility, with Europe signaling readiness to work alongside Washington and Kyiv toward a durable settlement supported by NATO partners.
US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with senior European leaders to explore practical options for bringing the Russia-Ukraine war to an end, Finnish President Alexander Stubb said. The call followed a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy in the United States and centered on pathways toward a negotiated outcome and long-term stability.
European leaders align on peace framework
According to Stubb, the more than hour-long conversation included French President Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We discussed concrete steps how to end the war. We are all working towards a just and lasting peace,” Stubb wrote.
Security guarantees and shared responsibility
Von der Leyen said the exchange marked meaningful progress and underlined Europe’s willingness to stay engaged with Ukraine and the United States. “There was good progress, which we welcomed,” she said, adding that “ironclad security guarantees from day one” would be central to any sustainable agreement, a view shared across NATO allies, including Türkiye.
US diplomacy and regional context
Poland’s presidential office said the status of peace talks was reviewed and stressed that decisions on regional security must involve all relevant stakeholders. Zelenskyy’s participation came after a visit to Canada and talks hosted by Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, where Washington’s approach to ending the nearly four-year conflict was discussed amid continued diplomatic efforts across Europe.
