Trump may seize Iran's Kharg Island if talks fail: Israeli media

Yedioth Ahronoth reports preparations underway for potential occupation of key oil export hub as Israel seeks to maximize military gains.
US President Donald Trump may order the occupation of Iran's Kharg Island—the strategic hub of the country's oil exports—if negotiations with Tehran fail, Israeli media reported Wednesday. The potential move would represent a significant escalation in the five-week conflict.
Seizure scenario
"Trump strongly wants to end the war, and if that fails, he will seize the Kharg Island," the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported, citing an unnamed Israeli source. "Preparations for this scenario are also underway," the source added. Kharg Island lies approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) off Iran's coast in the Persian Gulf and serves as the primary terminal for Iran's crude oil exports, making it a critical economic and strategic asset.
Military acceleration
According to the daily, Israel is seeking to achieve as many of its military objectives as possible before any potential ceasefire, aiming "to reduce Iran's military production capabilities." The report comes amid broader speculation about a possible diplomatic breakthrough, with Israeli media also reporting that Trump may announce a ceasefire with Iran by Saturday if Tehran offers substantial concessions.

Conflict context
The US and Israel have maintained airstrikes on Iran since Feb. 28, killing more than 1,340 people including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage while disrupting global markets and aviation. The potential seizure of Kharg Island would strike at the heart of Iran's oil-dependent economy.
