Trump praises ICE airport deployment, threatens National Guard
US President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump has hailed the deployment of federal immigration agents to major US airports, vowing to send the National Guard if necessary. The move comes amid a budget standoff with Democrats, who are demanding reforms within ICE following a fatal shooting of two American protesters earlier this year.

President Donald Trump has voiced strong support for the deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to major US airports, describing the operation as a critical step toward restoring order. Speaking at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual fundraising dinner, Trump said the agents were doing an “unbelievable job” since their deployment began Monday. “If we have to, we’re going to send in the National Guard if we need to,” he added.

Budget standoff fuels tensions

The federal deployment comes as the White House and congressional Democrats remain locked in a budget dispute over funding for the Department of Homeland Security, ICE’s parent agency. Democrats are demanding comprehensive reforms within ICE following an incident earlier this year in which ICE agents fatally shot two American protesters amid the administration’s ongoing immigration enforcement operations. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer insisted Wednesday that Democrats have been “very clear” about their reform demands, adding: “If anyone is slowing down negotiation and hurting TSA workers, it’s the Republican leadership who did not include one single reform.”

A polarized political climate

Trump criticized Democratic lawmakers, accusing them of refusing to fund Transportation Security Administration personnel. “You have to remember that the radical left Democrats need to get DHS back and open immediately,” he said. The standoff highlights the deepening partisan divide over immigration enforcement and federal agency funding, with both sides digging in as the dispute continues.

Türkiye’s measured approach to border security

As the United States grapples with internal political tensions over immigration enforcement, Türkiye has pursued a balanced approach to border security that combines robust measures with humanitarian considerations. Ankara has consistently emphasized the importance of legal frameworks and due process in immigration matters, while maintaining firm control over its borders against irregular migration. Turkish policymakers have stressed that sustainable solutions require both security and respect for fundamental rights—a principle that continues to guide Türkiye’s approach to one of the most complex border management challenges in the region.
