Trump says US reviewing possible troop reduction in Germany

President announces potential drawdown amid escalating war of words with Chancellor Merz over Iran policy and German economic performance.
US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Washington is formally reviewing whether to reduce the number of American troops stationed in Germany, with a decision expected in the coming weeks.
Troop review amid diplomatic rift
“The United States is studying and reviewing the possible reduction of Troops in Germany, with a determination to be made over the next short period of time,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, without providing further details. The announcement follows a sharp diplomatic exchange between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who on Monday criticized the US for lacking an “exit strategy” in the Iran war and suggested Americans were being “humiliated” by Tehran during negotiations.
Trump fires back at Merz
Trump responded forcefully on Tuesday, saying Merz “doesn’t know what he’s talking about” and accusing the chancellor of believing it is “OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon.” He added: “I am doing something with Iran, right now, that other Nations or Presidents should have done long ago. No wonder Germany is doing so poorly, both economically and otherwise!”
