US President Donald Trump said Wednesday that diplomatic negotiations with Iran would terminate immediately if Tehran attempts to collect fees from vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, warning that such tolls would derail ongoing efforts to address regional tensions.

US President Donald Trump warned on Wednesday that diplomatic negotiations with Iran would terminate immediately if Tehran attempts to collect fees from maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that any such tolls would bring talks to an instant end.

Strait of Hormuz fees

Trump claimed that Iranian officials assured Washington that no tolls, insurance costs, or other charges are being sought from vessels transiting the strategic waterway. "If this is false information, negotiations would end, immediately," he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

US agricultural exports

The US president also reiterated that no cash would be provided directly to Tehran, noting instead that Washington intends to utilize controlled Iranian funds to pay American farmers for agricultural exports. "Food is desperately needed in Iran, and we will be purchasing it for them exclusively from the United States," he said, adding that commodities such as corn and wheat would address shortages in the Islamic Republic.

Diplomatic backdrop

The warning comes as Washington and Tehran explore economic arrangements to prevent escalation in the Gulf region, where the Strait of Hormuz serves as a vital chokepoint for global energy shipments.
