Trump warns NATO 'would be weak without US military backing role'

United States President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump said NATO’s strength largely depends on Washington, arguing that the alliance would be ineffective without American military support. Speaking at the White House, Trump claimed NATO became stronger during his leadership while repeating long-standing criticism that several member states rely too heavily on the US for defense commitments.

US President Donald Trump said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization would lack real power without the United States, underlining Washington’s central role in the alliance. Speaking at a White House briefing, Trump addressed questions about his commitment to NATO, stating that the bloc’s military strength is closely tied to US involvement and leadership.

Trump’s view on nato leadership

Trump argued that NATO became more effective during his time in office, saying he had improved relations within the alliance and pushed members to take defense obligations more seriously. “I’ve made it much stronger,” he told reporters, portraying his presidency as a turning point for the transatlantic alliance.

Criticism of past nato policies

While voicing general support, Trump distanced himself from earlier NATO decisions, noting that many controversial policies were adopted before his administration. He described NATO as “sometimes overrated” but maintained that the alliance is currently stronger than when he first entered office.

Us role in transatlantic security

Trump stressed that US military power remains the backbone of NATO, asserting that without Washington’s participation the alliance would struggle to maintain deterrence. His remarks echo ongoing debates within NATO, including among European allies and partners such as Türkiye, over burden-sharing and long-term security responsibilities.
