Fire breaks out at Bangladesh's capital Dhaka international airport

An eight-member Turkish technical team has arrived in Dhaka to support Bangladesh's investigation into the massive fire that damaged Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The blaze suspended flight operations and destroyed imported goods stored in the cargo section.

An eight-member team of Turkish technical experts has arrived in Bangladesh to assist with the investigation into a major fire that severely damaged the cargo village at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The specialists, led by First Degree Chief Superintendent Oykun Ilgun, will provide technical support for determining the cause and circumstances of the October 18 blaze that disrupted airport operations.

High-Level Meetings in Dhaka

The Turkish delegation met with Sheikh Bashiruddin, adviser to Bangladesh's Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, in Dhaka on Sunday to coordinate investigation efforts. During their discussions, both parties reviewed the extensive damage caused by the fire at the airport's cargo facility, where imported goods are primarily stored. The Bangladesh official expressed appreciation for Türkiye's technical assistance.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Bashiruddin emphasized that the collaborative investigation would "strengthen the mutual relations between the two countries and will play an important role in advancing the investigation activities." The technical cooperation represents ongoing diplomatic engagement between Dhaka and Ankara, highlighting Türkiye's capacity to provide specialized expertise in disaster response and forensic investigation to international partners.

Recent Fire Incidents in Bangladesh

The airport blaze required 37 firefighting units alongside Bangladesh's army, air force, and navy personnel to bring under control. This incident follows two other major factory fires in Dhaka and Chattogram this month that resulted in at least 16 fatalities, raising concerns about fire safety standards and emergency response capabilities in the South Asian nation.
