Election officials complete their preparations and check the votes before counting them after the parliamentary elections voting ends at a polling station in Erbil, Iraq on November 11, 2025.

Türkiye has called for restraint from all parties during Iraq's parliamentary elections following provocative incidents targeting Iraqi Turkmen Front campaign materials in Kirkuk. Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the ethnically diverse city and ensuring security for all communities.

Türkiye has appealed for calm and restraint among all political actors during Iraq's parliamentary elections on Tuesday, responding to provocative acts directed against Iraqi Turkmen Front campaign posters in the northern city of Kirkuk. Foreign Ministry spokesman Oncu Keceli confirmed that Ankara is closely monitoring developments in coordination with ITF officials following incidents that have raised tensions ahead of the critical national vote.

Diplomatic Engagement and Security Concerns

In an official statement, Keceli revealed that "relevant parties have been advised to act with common sense" to prevent further escalation during the sensitive electoral period. The spokesman extended condolences to security personnel killed in related incidents and wished swift recovery to injured individuals, underscoring the human cost of election-related violence that has emerged in the ethnically mixed region.

Kirkuk's Strategic Importance

Characterizing Kirkuk as a "microcosm of Iraq" due to its significant social diversity, Keceli emphasized that preserving the city's peace and stability remains particularly crucial during election periods. The statement reflected Türkiye's substantial interest in the security and political representation of Turkmen communities in northern Iraq, where historical ethnic tensions periodically surface during electoral contests and political transitions.

Expectations from Iraqi Authorities

The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed expectation that Iraqi authorities will implement necessary measures to guarantee safety and security for all ethnic communities in Kirkuk throughout the electoral process. Ankara further voiced hope that the parliamentary elections would conclude peacefully and ultimately strengthen Iraq's national unity and territorial integrity, objectives that align with Türkiye's longstanding regional policy emphasizing stable, unified neighboring states.
